Guide to All 27 Carnival Cruise Ships

It came alongside several sauces and sides of broccoli and crinkle-cut fries for $49 ($15 for kids). Another excellent dinner during my voyage occurred at Rudi's Seagrill (Deck 8), an upscale seafood restaurant named for chef and pop artist Rudi Sodamin. The lobster macaroni and cheese was the perfect indulgence to start my meal, and I followed it up with a delicious crab cake. As a sucker for soft-serve ice cream, I was a frequent visitor to the three soft-serve ice cream and frozen yogurt machines on decks 8, 16 and 17.

The seating spaces form an outdoor extension of bars or restaurants, so you're never far from cocktails. During the day, passengers chill out, reading and having quiet conversation. At night, when the restaurants open, the space is open to diners. A small stage hosts live music in the evening; selections lean toward country and classic rock.

Junior Suite

There is also a nice thermal area with a Hydrotherapy Pool with heated mosaic-topped loungers and various shower, steam and sauna options. Access to the thermal area is $129 for a week and complimentary for Cloud 9 Spa cabin guests. Like every state-of-the-art cruise ship, Carnival Celebration has shops for just about every need, from souvenirs and toothpaste to high end jewelry and watches.

Ocean Suites also include VIP check-in, walk-in closet and bathroom with whirlpool tub. Carnival Cruise Lines cruise vacations will always be filled with a plethora of unbelievable onboard activities. There’s WaterWorks for those who like to get wet n’ wild, SportSquare for the athletically-inclined, and a host of bars and clubs to let loose in. Browse the options below and learn a bit more about Carnival’s onboard activities. During "halftime," the ship's theater singers and dancers put on a show on the pool deck, dressed in team colors to support the fictional Carnival University — the team cruisers are supposedly cheering on during the festivities. The second new show is the "Lone Star Tailgate." Drawing on Texas' love for all things football, Carnival has created four indoor/outdoor "quarters" of fun to mimic the four quarters of a football game.

Kids-only dinners are provided in the Lido Restaurant each night after embarkation day and lunch is provided on port days only. The Tides Pool at the aft end of Deck 16 is slightly less frantic but also prone to a lot of traffic and sun loving crowds. The Patio Pool area on aft Deck 8 is a bit more low key but it, too, enjoys its share of traffic from the bars and dining venues in this part of the ship. Carnival Freedom is ideal for first-time cruisers because of the lower guest capacity and the smaller ship size.

Carnival Jubilee bars

Otherwise, you can try to grab a spot under one of two cabanas that actually sit in the water, so passengers can dip their feet while enjoying some drinks. One of the best things about Carnival Celebration’s size is that it can offer a selection of pools to suit one’s mood. For family-centric fun close to all of the top deck eateries, there is the Beach Pool. Served by the two-story Red Frog Tiki Bar, the midships Deck 16 space fills up fast on sea days and is the go-to for pool games, dances and live music in the afternoon and big deck parties and movie screenings at night. FFor children ages 2 to 11, Carnival Horizon offers Camp Ocean, located on Deck 11, midship.

Carnival Jubilee is the newest Excel-class ship in the fleet, sailing from Galveston, Texas. Adults also have their own space at the Serenity Adult-Only Retreat with swaying hammocks and a bar. With more space for stretching out indoors, plus a large balcony for kicking back outdoors, try an Ocean Suite to experience private, luxurious relaxation.

Carry-on drinks policy

The Thermal Suite is free to passengers staying in Cloud 9 Spa cabins but requires an additional fee for anyone else; passengers can purchase a daily pass or one that covers the cruise. Two water slides are the centerpiece of Carnival Horizon's Dr. Seuss WaterWorks, a zany, wonderful spot designed for the young and the not-so-young. (Horizon is the only ship in Carnival's fleet to feature the Seuss-themed water park.) The Cat in the Hat slide -- it's more than 450 feet long -- sends riders down a twisty, turny trip while riding a tube. The entrance to the slide resembles the cat's famous red and white hat, a pattern that is repeated on the slide itself; some sections are translucent, others opaque.

The space feels like a hip, teen nightclub, with a big dance floor and infinite space for flopping down. Teens, ages 15 to 17, can come and go as they like and participate in things like sports and gaming tournaments, and theme events like punk rocker or mismatched outfit nights. The Cloud 9 fitness center is located at the front of the ship on Deck 12, linked to the spa. While the views during your workout are spectacular, the gym is surprisingly small for a ship that carries nearly 4,000 passengers. When the fitness center is busiest -- in the morning between roughly 8 and 10 and in the late afternoon ahead of dinner -- you'll likely have to wait for equipment. We found ourselves tripping over fellow gym-goers in the packed weight area, where we literally had to squeeze into equipment to avoid stepping on toes.

Each weeklong cruise will schedule two formal nights — known as "elegant nights." If you're bound for the dining rooms, men are expected to turn up in dress slacks and a dress shirt, preferably with a sports coat or even a suit. The suggested attire for women on such nights is cocktail dresses, pantsuits, elegant skirts and blouses. Passengers who wish to avoid dressing up can enjoy dinner in any of the casual eateries aboard. Passengers link credit cards to their onboard accounts or put up a set amount of cash to charge against, using their keycards as a means of making purchases.

Available exclusively to Havana cabin passengers, the Havana Pool feels a bit like an oasis. It's got greenery and faux palm trees, a good amount of shade, two hot tubs, loungers, sunbeds and colorful wicker chairs. Havana cabin passengers must be at least 12, so the pool area also is more adult-oriented.

Daytime activities include trivia and other hosted games, movies on the big LED screen Carnival Seaside Theater, dance classes, bingo, bean bag contests, ice carving demonstrations, karaoke, scavenger hunts, singalongs and more. All of these activities are listed on the Carnival Hub App, which worked very well during my week on board. The shows here are good -- so good that the entire area turns into a huge bottleneck traffic jam central whenever a performance is ongoing. The other problem here are the sight lines, which are not so great if you are not in the main seating area of the Deck 6 level or right by one of the glass balconies on Decks 7 and 8. To get a good seat here for the big shows, it is recommended to arrive between 45 minutes and an hour early, which can be a challenge to plan around a leisurely dinner or drinks at a favorite bar. Think nightly dance parties in White Heat Dance Club, movies under the stars on the pool deck, and tacos from BlueIguana Cantina.

On my sailing, the bartenders were phenomenal and even remembered that I prefer non-dairy milk with my lattes. Other venues in the area include the Marina Bar for cocktails and coffee, complimentary Italian restaurant Cucina del Capitano and for-fee seafood eatery Rudi's Seagrill, created by food pop artist chef Rudi Sodamin. It butts up against the Dr. Seuss WaterWorks space, which has colorful seats and umbrellas. The Limelight Lounge also hosts karaoke, live music and dancing, turning into a nightclub when the armchairs are removed. The Cloud 9 Spa and Beauty Salon on forward Decks 5 and 6 offer all sorts of treatments, which can be reserved for a fee on the app or in person.
